In the early 1970’s, Duane Sumner developed an interest in buying and selling used farm equipment. At that time he was employed by the Aro Corporation in Bryan, Ohio.
There was a strong demand for good used farm equipment, so he began to buy equipment on a part-time basis and primarily market through wholesale auctions or to other dealers.
In 1973, Duane left the Aro Corporation and decided to devote full time to trading machinery, raising beef cattle, and farming. With being able to devote more time to the equipment business, he founded Sumner Equipment and new areas opened up for purchasing good used items, as well as avenues for marketing those items.
In 1978, upon graduating from high school, Duane’s oldest son, Shane, began working for his father full time. His duties included driving truck, working on equipment, and attending auctions. The business continued to market their equipment primarily through the wholesale auctions and to other dealers.
In 2006, Duane and Shane formed a partnership — Sumner Tractor LLC — with their primary focus of buying and selling tractors. With many good resources for purchasing quality used tractors, they devoted their focus towards the retail market. This is where they developed their statement of: “Quality Equipment at Reasonable Prices”.
Over the years, the Sumner’s have handled hundreds of tractors — mainly John Deere’s — starting with the two cylinders, then progressing into the 20 series, right up through the very popular 60 series. The demand has remained strong for the 50, 55, and 60 series due to their affordability versus new or late models units and having less computerized systems, etc. Therefore more owners and independent shops are able to work on these models.
We continue to be a small rural family run business looking to assist farmers with quality and affordable horsepower.
